How the water purifier(RO) works ?
The reverse osmosis or RO is one of the most advance and widely used technology in the water purification system. The Reverse osmosis forces the water to pass through a semipermeable membrane which is a thin membrane which allows only the water molecules to pass through and leaves behind the large molecules od dust, impurities, chemicals like lead, mercury etc. These membranes are very thin and only allows the particles or molecules which are small in size and retain back the large molecules. Thus gives out the pure water when passed through it. It is also useful to separate the dissolved impurities.

Buying Guide For Water Purifier
Why and what type of purifier we require?
As per the survey by UNICEF Less than 50 per cent of the population in India has access to safely managed drinking water. That is my most of water borne diseases attack our country. To overcome such situation we should use filtered water which is considered safe for drinking.
The water that comes to our home is purified by municipal corporation but it comes by travelling a long distance in the pipes and various under ground construction which results in the contamination of the water and makes it unsafe for drinking purpose. Where as if you use boring water then also some salts are found in it which results in the additional impurities which also require purifier to clean.
Moreover, it you lives near a costal area then you have to deal with salty water which is tasteless as well as smelly so you will not be able to drink them in that form so you need a purifier to soften it and make it fit for drinking purpose.
The type of the filter used is basically depends on the TDS level of the water.
What is a TDS?
The TDS or totally dissolved salts include the fully dissolved salts such as arsenic, mercury, lead or so on which are not good for humans to consume. Now, let’s us see for what TDS which filter suits best
TDS (in ppm) | Acceptance criteria | Type of purifier |
below 200 | This is a good TDS level but check for the essential mineral present in it |
UV + UF water purifier |
up to 500 | This TDS level is acceptable under BOS guidelines and most o the home water in India falls under this category |
RO + UV water purifier +TDS |
up to 1000 | This TDS level has more impurities and is not acceptable |
RO + UV +UF +TDS controller with mineralizer |
up to 2000 | This level is highly unacceptable | An excellent quality water purifier with RO+UV+UF+ TDS Controller |
How you can measure TDS?
Basically, there are three methods to measure the TDS of water. These are digital TDS meter, Weighing scale and Conductivity. But the most popular one is the digital TDS. As it is easy to measure and anyone can do it with the help of device called TDS meter.
HOW TO USE TDS METER?
The TDS meter is easy to use and you might have seen this with the technician who come home to check the water hardness. Follow the following steps and you will get the reading in front of you:
- Remove the cover of the tester and look for the on/off button of the tester.
- Take some clean water in a glass.
- Now what you see in device is the two rod which is to be dipped in the water.
- switch on the device and dip the rods in the water.
- In minutes it will display the result.
- The result will show in PPM(parts per millions)
Mostly the TDS of the tap water remains up to 250 which is consider to be a good TDS but it does not means it is safe for drinking. It may be contaminated with impurities such as arsenic and Lead. To overcome this you need a good RO water purifier.
Note: A TDS of 2000 ppm is consider to be a very unsafe water and is not potable for drinking purpose.
Difference between water in village and cities
The villagers have a access to natural water bodies from where they collect water for household use but this water is also not safe for drinking as we can see that most of the activities such as washing clothes, bathing, animal bath, as well as defecation in village are done on the river basin which makes the water contaminated. But the people do not have access to the safe drinking water as they do not have good water filter to clean the water and most of the people in villages are affect by water borne diseases such as cholera, typhoid, diarrhea etc. to over come such problems one should look for a good and sustainable water plant that will deliver a clean and safe drinking water.
In cities the water is mainly supplied by municipality and boring water is available. The water supplied by municipal corporation is filtered at the water plant and then distributed but this need to be transferred through he pipelines which comes through various underground path causing the addition of the impurities while on the way to home. To eliminates such components we need filter in the cities. Where as the boring water is also contaminated with heavy metals such as fluorides, Arsenic and lead. this water also need to be filtered before use so we need water purifier for it.
The type of water purifier is based on the TDS level and the impurities present in it tis we have discussed in the above section.
Types of purifier
1. RO water purifier
The Ro water purifier is the most common purifier and use the reverse osmosis process to purify water. In this process the water pass through a semi permeable membrane which results in the removal of the particles that are not permitted to pass through such a thin membrane.
The RO purifier is best for the Dissolve salts like arsenic, lead, mercury, heavy metals and fluoride. If you have such type of water in your house then this the best purifier you can have.
There are two types of RO purifier : under the counter and the wall mounted. The under counter are usually installed under the sink cabinet where as the wall mounted are hanged on the wall. The RO water is considered to be safe for drinking purpose. But the main disadvantage is that it runs on electricity and for every 1 Litre purification 650 ml of water is wasted
2. UV purifier
The UV purifier uses the UV Light to kills the germs present in the water and clean it. Generally water pass through the a UV lamp which cleans the water. In this water the germs bodies and there but they are harmless.
The main drawback of the water purifier is it is not suitable for hard water as it does not convert it into soft water and the impurities such as the arsenic, lead and mercury are left behind in the water. Moreover the turbid or muddy water is also not filtered through this process. Also it foes not change the odour of the water. But it has one main advantage as the essential minerals in the water remain intact which are good for health.
3. UF Filtration
The ultra filtration or the UF filtration is the process in which a hollow membrane is built to trap the bacteria and viruses and purify the water. It is similar to the Ro process but the Ro can treat the hardness of the water whereas the UF does not qualify this purpose.
The UF filter is only beneficial for a place having very low TDS or chemicals in the water as they are unable to remove the hardness as well as the heavy metals such as arsenic lead etc.
4. Carbon filter
The activated carbon filter is the carbon made from the charcoal. The carbon filter attracts the germs and viruses and they got stick to its surface. The activated carbon filter is usually placed before the RO membrane as it prevents the damage of the RO membranes.
The activated carbon kills all the germs causing the water borne diseases and also adds taste and removes odour from the water. It works on the principle of “adsorption” which means it attracts all the impurities and stick them on it’s own surface. The main drawback of the activated carbon is that if left unused for a couple for days it can be hub for the bacteria and germs.
Sediment filter
We usually see the white filter before the water purifier which is called as sediment. The sediment cleans the sedentary particle from the water and prevent them from entering the water purifier thus reduces the damage of the purifier.
How to take care of water purifier
As the Ro water purifier cleans the water while catching the germs it must be taken care of as a little damage or dirty one can contaminate the water and transfer germs to the drinking water and make it unsuitable for drinking purpose. The RO is works with the 3 to 5 stage all being important part so must be taken care of.
- Pre filter or the sediment: The pre filter must be cleaned in 6 to 9 months as it is the most important part of the purification process. It prevents the damage of the RO membrane.
- Carbon filter: The carbon filter must also be changed after 6 to 9 months as it absorbs the chlorine and gives taste and removes bad odour. If not done then the chlorine will reach the RO membrane and can damage it. As well as the bad our and weird taste will also be added to the filtered water.
- RO membrane: The RO membrane must be changed after 2 to3 years depending the usage and the condition of the water in the locality. Call the customer care fort his purpose or you can but the kit and do it yourself.
A proper sanitization should also be done in two to three months . For this you can buy a sanitization kit and read the user manual for the purpose. You can also follow these steps to do the procedure. First remove the main power supply. turn off the water supply remove all the components and wash them. Now place back all the components as you removed and turn on the supply as well as power supply.
If you want your filter to be a long lasting then clean it form outside as well with a soapy water and frequently clean the tap as it might get dirty due to continuous use.
